Sport: Shooting
Sian Bruce
Find out a bit more on Sian and her Shooting career:
Q How old were you when you started and what is your first memory of your sport? I was 10 when I first started to shoot, just for the fun of it then. My first memory was of the sore shoulder the next day and the bruise that lasted about a week.
Q When did you first realize you had the potential to make it as an athlete? When I had only been shooting my discipline for a few months and I was asked to go with the GB team to Cyprus.
Q What has been your favourite competition venue to date and why? Nicosia shooting ground in Cyprus because the weather was great and I shot with Chiara Cainero who won the gold at Beijing.
Q What is on your competition schedule this year? I am going to the European Championships in Croatia in July. I might be going to the World Championships in Slovenia in August and I am going to Sweden for the Ladies International Grand Prix in September.
Q Do you have any pre-event superstitions or rituals? I have to have a piece of chewing gum, ha!
Q How many hours do spend training each day? Well I'm a fair weather shooter so it depends if its raining or not, but usually every Wednesday night and most of Saturday, some other days in between.
Q Technique or physical - which do you spend most time working on to improve? For shooting its mostly technique.
Q Are there other sporting figures you look up to? And why? Pinky Le Grelle, because she has been in my sport for years and has more experience than any other shooter I know. She is one of those people who you just like to be around.
Q What's the best piece of advice you have been given? “don’t change what you do because others tell you to, only change if its best for you”
Q Could you make a career out of your sport or can you combine it with another
profession? Probably not from shooting alone unless you were extremely good, but you could if you went into coaching.
Q What is your ultimate ambition? To go to the Olympics and win something.
Q Do you have to make any sacrifices to be the best that you can be in your sport? If so, what are they and why do you make them? My weekends are mostly taken up by shooting and a few week nights so I don’t see my friends as much out of school, because If I want to go far then I have to train.
