Services - Sports Science

Sports Science uses the scientific method and relies on observed information to explain and predict sports phenomena. It is a term that encompasses many areas that are essential for performance. For TFIS, these areas include: physiology, psychology, nutrition and performance analysis and our athletes access these services to enhance performance.

Physiology

Physiology is the study of how the body adapts and responds to exercise. By using this knowledge, we can assess how the athlete responds to the physical aspects of their sport and then from this, use techniques to develop physical performance. This assessment is commonly conducted through sport specific fitness testing and provides the athlete and coach with feedback and advice regarding fitness. Physiologist Andy Sommerville works with TFIS athletes.

Psychology

Sports Psychology is the study of human behaviour in sport settings. More specifically, it is concerned with developing the mental skills to turn potentially negative situations, and their possible negative impact, into positive experiences where an athlete feels confident, motivated and in control. Using a variety of different tools, sport psychology can provide the edge that enables individuals to achieve their maximum potential in sport. Sport Psychologist Andrea Faull provides psychology support to TFIS athletes.

Nutrition

A primary requirement of any athlete is to consume a well-balanced diet and nutrionally complete diet. Optimum nutrition can make a vast difference to how your body responds to training itself, and how you perform in your sport. A Dietician can provide advice on a range of nutritionally related medical issues to weight management to anthropometric testing. Declan Fields works with TFIS providing individual support, as well as workshops to enhance knowledge and skills on nutrition.

Performance Analysis

Performance Analysis is an area of Sports Science that informs the coaching process through the provision of statistical and video information. Consultants from Elite Sports Analysis work to ensure that Performance Analysis is effectively integrated into both team and individual athletes' programmes. This is achieved by working closely with coaches and athletes, as well as other Sports Science and Medicine colleagues. This strategic planning within the coaching process is essential if Performance Analysis is to have the desired impact.
